Forecast Update: Sun returns Thursday

The complaint department at Right Weather was overwhelmed Wednesday with people tired of seeing clouds, drizzle, mist and showers in Southern New England. Thankfully, we will finally get to see some blue sky on Thursday.

The sky will clear by dawn Thursday, and, after starting the day in the 40s, the temperature will rise into the mid to upper 50s under a sun/cloud blend on Thursday afternoon. Thursday night will be partly cloudy and seasonably cool, with lows in the mid to upper 40s.

Sub-freezing weather possible Friday night

A strong cold front will move through around midday Friday. If we get some morning sunshine, and the front is delayed a couple of hours, then the temperature may spike to near 60. It’s more likely that the front will move through soon enough that the high is in the low to mid 50s. The departing cold front will bring gusty winds and free-falling temperatures Friday night. As the colder air charges in late Friday, there may be a few (gulp) snow showers in the higher terrain of Worcester County and far NW RI.

The temperature will nosedive through the 30s Friday night. Interior locations may see the temperature slip below freezing for several hours late at night. That will put an end to the growing/mosquito season in those locations. From the coast to Providence, there is the chance of some frost, but only if the wind diminishes – which is debatable at this point. Plus, the air will be very dry, so, right now, I am not anticipating a widespread frost Saturday morning. In any event, look for a low temperature between 30-36 degrees in the Providence area Saturday morning. That is cold enough to strongly consider bringing in any plants that can’t handle freezing temperatures.

Saturday afternoon looks bright, but cool, with highs only in the low 50s. We’ll see more clouds on Sunday as warmer air tries to return to Southern New England. A few showers are possible in the morning, with partly to mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon.

It will stay mild Monday, but some more showers may arrive with the next front that will bring cool weather back in the middle of next week.
