Quiet, chilly stretch through the weekend

Chilly stretch likely in Southern New England

A few snow showers and flurries near the coast Thursday morning signified the return of some chilly weather to Southern New England. Thursday afternoon will be mostly cloudy, brisk (15-25 mph), and chilly, with temperatures in the upper 30s. It will be mainly clear and cold Thursday night. Lows will range from the upper teens inland to the mid 20s near the coast. There will be a wind chill that has it feeling like the teens everywhere.

Friday afternoon looks partly sunny, brisk and cool. Highs will be in the low 40s. The weekend will not be significantly warmer, but the weather is looking a lot better than it was a few days ago for the Newport St. Patrick’s Day parade.  A weak weather system will likely move far enough south of Southern New England that it stays mainly or completely dry through this weekend. Right now, Saturday looks partly to mostly sunny with lows in the 20s and highs near 40 – not great for mid-March, but we’ve seen worse!

Dry, cool into next week

It will be mainly clear and cold Saturday night. The temperature should dive into the 20s again by late Saturday evening, with lows in the mid to upper 20s on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon looks partly sunny, with highs in the low 40s. The weather will stay fairly quiet through Monday. Highs will only be in the low 40s again on Monday. Normal highs are in the upper 40s at this time of the year.

Mix to rain on Tuesday

A stronger weather system arrives Monday night into Tuesday. Initially, there may be enough cold air around to allow for some snow or mixed precipitation – especially inland. As the storm progresses, enough mild air should arrive to change any wintry precipitation to chilly rain on Tuesday. The storm has the potential to bring a decent soaking. It will depart with chilly air in its wake for the first day of spring on March 20. There may even be a few snow showers flying in New England next Wednesday.
