Excessive Heat Warning for part of SNE Thursday

Thursday will be a scorcher in Southern New England. Highs temperatures in the mid 90s combined with dew points near 70 on Thursday will lead to a heat index of up to 107° in most of RI, interior CT, and inland SE MA. An Excessive Heat Warning  has been issued by the National Weather Service effective from 11 am to 7 pm Thursday in those locations.

HEAT WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 7 PM EDT
THURSDAY. THE EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* LOCATION...NORTHERN CONNECTICUT...NORTHERN RHODE ISLAND AND
  SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES THIS EVENING...AROUND 100 DUE TO TEMPERATURES
  IN THE MID 90S AND DEWPOINTS IN THE UPPER 60S AND LOWER 70S.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES THURSDAY...UP TO 107 DUE TO TEMPERATURES IN
  THE MID 80S...AND DEWPOINTS AROUND 70.

* TIMING...THROUGH THE EVENING FOR THE HEAT ADVISORY. THE
  EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THURSDAY MIDDAY THROUGH
  EVENING.

* IMPACTS...THOSE OUTDOORS FOR PROLONGED PERIODS WILL BE MORE AT
  RISK FOR HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS
EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE.

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING MEANS THAT A PROLONGED PERIOD OF
DANGEROUSLY HOT TEMPERATURES WILL OCCUR. THE COMBINATION OF HOT
TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A DANGEROUS
SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE LIKELY. AVOID PROLONGED WORK
IN THE SUN OR IN POORLY VENTILATED AREAS. DRINK PLENTY OF
FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENT...STAY OUT OF THE
SUN...AND CHECK IN ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE.  WHEN
POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY
HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE
