Heat Advisory Sunday for part of Southern New England

High temperatures and humidity are leading to a fourth straight day with Heat Advisory criteria in part of Southern New England. The heat index is expected to be near 100° Sunday afternoon in the Providence area and most of interior Southeastern Massachusetts. The advisory is in effect from 2pm to 7pm.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible late in the afternoon or evening to help cool off areas that have seen high temperatures in the 90s since the 4th of July.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A HEAT
ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 7 PM
EDT THIS EVENING.

* LOCATION...THE I-95 URBAN CORRIDOR STRETCHING FROM THE
  PROVIDENCE TO BOSTON METRO AREAS...AS WELL AS THE INTERIOR
  SOUTHEAST COASTAL PLAIN OF MASSACHUSETTS. 

* HEAT INDEX VALUES...WILL MEET OR EXCEED 100 DEGREES AS
  TEMPERATURES REACH INTO THE LOW-90S WITH APPARENT HUMIDITY.

* TIMING...THE PEAK OF THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL OCCUR THIS
  AFTERNOON BETWEEN 2 PM AND 7 PM.

* IMPACTS...PERSONS OUTDOORS FOR PROLONGED PERIODS OF TIME COULD 
  BE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO HEAT ILLNESSES. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS 
  AND STAY OUT OF THE SUN WHEN POSSIBLE.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS
EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY
WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE. AVOID PROLONGED WORK IN THE SUN OR IN POORLY VENTILATED
AREAS. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS...STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED
ENVIRONMENT...STAY OUT OF THE SUN...AND CHECK IN ON RELATIVES AND
NEIGHBORS.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN
POSSIBLE...RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR
EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT
STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN
POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK...THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS
IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY
HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE
