Tropical Storm Fernand weakened to a tropical depression and then a remnant area of low pressure on Monday, but not before bringing flooding rain and deadly landslides to Veracruz, Mexico. 13 people died when landslides occurred in the hills above their homes.
The storm was expected to bring 4-12″ of rain to Veracruz. The short-lived tropical storm formed Sunday evening before making landfall near the coastal city of Veracruz early Monday morning. Maximum sustained winds never topped 50 mph, and, as expected, the storm’s main impact was from the flooding rain.
The National Hurricane Center is watching a tropical wave south-southeast of the Cape Verde Islands for tropical development in the next five days. As of 2pm Monday, the NHC was predicting a 30% chance that the disturbance becomes a tropical cyclone in the next five days as it moves east through the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.
