The severe thunderstorm that moved from the West Bay to the East Bay in RI just after 4 pm on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 may have produced a brief tornado in Barrington and/or Warren, RI. Residents reported a brief period of extremely intense wind and rain, and significant tree damage in parts of Barrington and Warren. Some of the greatest damage in Warren, RI was near Market Street. As you can see in the radar analysis video, that is where the radar picked up on a brief period of strong winds and rotation.
From the National Weather Service regarding our question about whether they would conduct a site survey: There are no plans for a site survey. Although we saw some rotation earlier when the storms were near Block Island, the storms near Barrington/Warren were simply a collapsing core…a strong one, but no rotation so straight-line winds.
