Weak Tropical Storm Gabrielle soaking Caribbean islands

Tropical Storm Gabrielle is packing winds of just 40 mph, but the storm is moving very slowly and is bringing heavy rains to Puerto Rico and nearby islands. As of 8 AM Thursday, the center of the storm was between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The storm is expected to move northwest with little change in strength in the next 48 hours. As the storm moves north it is expected to meet wind shear that may weaken it as it moves east of the Bahamas.

Right now, the long-range forecast for Gabrielle is for a turn to the north and northeast away from the United States. This track is highly dependent on the storm’s interaction with a trough of low pressure moving off the US East Coast this weekend. It is still possible that the storm does not get turned northeast by the trough. In that case, it would be meandering in the Atlantic Ocean east of the Bahamas early next week.
