Screaming southerly winds may gust to 60 mph in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts Wednesday morning. At a minimum, there should be 25-45 mph winds as a large storm moves up the East Coast. The temperature will soar through the 50s into the low 60s by early Wednesday. Winds less than 1,000 feet off the surface will be hurricane force. The mild air near the surface may aid the stronger winds aloft in mixing down to the surface. While 70+ mph gusts are unlikely, there is the potential for gusts to near 60 mph. Winds that strong can caused downed trees and power lines leading to power outages.
The peak winds are expected between 4 am and 1 pm Wednesday. The National Weather Service has upgraded most of RI and SE MA from a Wind Advisory for gusts to 50 mph to a High Wind Warning for gusts to 60 mph .
