Three to five inches of rain fell in less than 18 hours from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning in most of RI and SE MA as a storm developed over the Mid-Atlantic. The heavy rain flooded streets and basements, and rapid rises on area rivers and streams will lead to minor flooding. The heaviest rain was moving out of RI by late in the morning on Sunday, and the rain will get lighter in SE MA by early in the afternoon.
Sunday afternoon looks damp and dreary, with the chance of a few showers, but no heavy rain. The temperature will gradually fall through the 40s with a northerly breeze. Cold rain showers are possible Sunday night, but the rain should not be as widespread or heavy as it was early Sunday.
Rain showers may change to mixed precipitation or snow as the back edge of the system moves through on Monday. No snow accumulation is expected, but it will be a very raw day with highs only in the mid to upper 30s and a fresh northerly breeze. Drier, milder weather is in the forecast for the midweek. There should be some sunshine Tuesday afternoon with highs in the mid to upper 40s. The temperature will likely reach 50° by Wednesday afternoon.
