Wednesday was a delightful spring day in Southern New England. White clouds dotted a deep blue sky, and a dry northwesterly breeze helped the temperature reach the upper 50s to low 60s in most areas – even near the coast. The wind direction on Thursday will be onshore, and the effect of the chilly ocean will be felt with highs about 5° cooler than Wednesday for most of RI and SE MA.
Wednesday night will be clear and cold with a light breeze. The temperature will likely fall below freezing in the countryside, and into the low to mid 30s in the cities and near the coast. Thursday looks mostly sunny, with the wind swinging around to the south-southwest and increasing to 15-25 mph. The cooler wind direction will keep the temperature close to 50° near the coast, in the mid 50s in the Providence area, and near 60° well inland.
Clouds will increase Thursday night ahead of a cold front that will stall over Southern New England Friday into the weekend. Friday looks mainly dry, with the best chance of showers early in the day. It will be mild, with a few sunny breaks, and highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. There is a better chance of rain Friday night into Saturday morning as a wave of low pressure forms along the stalled boundary. Right now, it looks like the showers will end by mid-morning Saturday, and the rest of the weekend will be dry and mild. Saturday’s highs will be in the upper 50s to low 60s. Sunday will be even warmer, with highs well into the 60s inland. It’s possible, with enough sunshine, that it will reach 70° on Sunday afternoon away from the coast. It will be 10-15° cooler near the coast because of an onshore breeze.
Monday will also be very mild, with highs in the same neighborhood as Sunday. The weather will become unsettled in the middle of next week. Showers are likely Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning as a slow-moving system eases through the Northeast. The weather does not look as warm from the middle to the end of next workweek.
