January 28 – Snow and rain ahead

Snow showers and flurries are possible during the day on Tuesday ahead of a storm system that will bring steadier precipitation between sunset and late at night. A coating of snow, especially on the grass, is possible before dusk on Tuesday. When the precipitation gets steadier Tuesday night, a change to rain is likely near the coast. As the storm departs late Tuesday night, rain may change back to mix/snow briefly before ending.

Snow changes to rain from south to north Tuesday evening

The best chance of several inches of snow is north of I-84 in Connecticut. Most of the rest of CT, RI, and E MA will see 2″ or less. Cold air returns quickly as the precipitation ends before dawn on Wednesday. Some icy roads are possible of the Wednesday morning commute.

High elevations in CT have the best chance of more than 3″ of snow

Wednesday looks cold and mainly dry. A passing snow shower or squall is possible late in the day. It looks cold with temps in the 20s and wind chills in the teens. Arctic air pours in Wednesday night. Low temperatures in the single digits are likely Thursday morning. Wind chills will be below zero. Thursday looks dry and very cold. Highs in the teens are likely.

Expect more cold and dry weather Friday and Saturday. Highs will be in the 20s and lows in the single digits and teens. Milder weather arrives Sunday and stays into next week. Highs in the 40s are likely Sunday and Monday. A storm system threatens with rain, and possibly some snow, The overall pattern does not look extremely cold next week.
