Heavy snow squalls and strong winds signaled the arrival of Arctic air early Wednesday evening. The wind will stay very active through this evening before dying down a bit late at night. The temperature nosedives into the single digits with sub-zero wind chills at dawn on Thursday. Thankfully, we are not getting the extreme cold that hit the Midwest in the past couple of days. It will be colder than normal, but not the brutal -15 to -30 temperatures that have hit Chicago and Minneapolis. Expect ineffective sunshine on Thursday with temps stuck in the low to mid teens during the afternoon. Grab the lip balm because the air will be extremely dry.
It may be even colder Thursday night under clear skies with a light wind. The temperature will fall into the single digits, and possibly below zero in some spots inland by early Friday morning. More dry weather is likely on Friday. I’m keeping my eye on a weak system moving south of Long Island, but it looks like it will be too far away to bring snow to Connecticut. There will be some clouds with temps only in the low to mid 20s on the first day of February.
Saturday starts with temps in the teens before rebounding into the mid 30s in the afternoon. It will stay dry with some clouds on Sunday. Expect highs near 40. Very mild weather is ahead for early next week. Highs may reach the 50s on Monday and Tuesday. Rain showers are possible in the midweek before colder weather returns late in the workweek.
There will likely be little, if any, snow in the next 7-10 days. However, the long-range models are suggesting that the wintry weather action may increase around February 10. It’s not the first time this winter the models have shown snow in the long-range, so I’m not quite ready to set it in stone. We’ll see how it evolves over the next week.
