January is in the books as the third consecutive colder than normal month in Southeastern New England. The temperature ranged from 1.6-2.4° below normal at the four major climatology sites in Southern New England. It was also snowier than normal in Providence, Boston, and Worcester. Hartford finished 84% of the normal snowfall.
The weather in January is easily divided into three distinct segments. The first 10 days of the month were much colder than normal, the middle 10 days were much warmer than normal, and the last 11 days were largely colder than normal.
The coldest weather in a decade arrived on January 4 after the first snowstorm of the year. The temperature fell below zero in most spots away from the immediate coast. The month featured two very cold snowstorms. The first happened on January 2-3, the second was on January 21-22. The temperature fell into the single digits to low teens in both storms. The first storm was a blizzard for Eastern Massachusetts.
