Analysis

Southern New England snow totals March 7-8, 2013

A long-duration and powerful March Nor’easter delivered another round of heavy snow to most of Southern New England near the end of a very active winter season. Worcester, MA recorded 22.8″ of snow, the second most on record since 1892 for a March or April storm. It was also the second top-10 all-time snow event to hit Worcester in the winter of 2012-13.

Boston, MA picked up more than a foot of snow, pushing the season total to more than one foot above normal. There were several reports of about two feet of snow in parts of CT and Central/Eastern MA. Rhode Island, by comparison, saw considerably less snow. A consistent dry slot kept most of Kent and Washington county out of the steady snow for most of the storm. As a result totals were fewer than 5 inches in those areas. Northern RI picked up 8-12″ of snow.

The map below shows the general contouring of the snow totals for Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. The National Weather Service has compiled a thorough list of unofficial snow reports. Use the interactive map to browse the reports.
