Tropical Storm Barry forms in Gulf of Mexico

The second tropical storm of the Atlantic Basin hurricane season has formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft observed winds strong enough to upgrade the system from a tropical depression to a minimal tropical storm. Barry has sustained winds of 40 mph. As of 3 pm Wednesday the storm was about 75 miles east-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico. The storm is moving west at 10 mph and is expected to make landfall Thursday morning with sustained winds of 45 mph and gusts to 60 mph. The storm will weaken to a tropical depression after making landfall. The main threat from the storm is the potential for flooding and mud slides as up to 10 inches of rain is possible in southern Mexico.
