Gusty winds near the coast Thursday night

A storm forming off of Cape Hatteras, NC will pass over or near Cape Cod late Thursday night. The storm will bring locally heavy rain to E CT, RI, and SE MA. It may also deliver 40 mph wind gusts for a brief period near the coast. Nantucket is the odds on favorite to see 40 mph gusts, but the potential for briefly strong winds extends from coastal RI through Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod and the islands. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for coastal waters around Southern New England, but it may be upgraded to a Gale Warning if it looks like the storm will strengthen and track over or west of Cape Cod.
