Summer 2013: Warmer and wetter than normal

The summer of 2013 featured one of the wettest months on record and one of the hottest months on record in Southern New England. An unusually rainy June gave way to an incredibly hot July. The season ended with a slightly cooler than normal August with near normal rainfall. June in Providence was the second wettest on record with 10.08″ of rain. July was the all-time warmest month in Providence with records dating back to 1905. June through August was the 10th wettest and 8th warmest on record in Providence.

Boston saw the third wettest June and seventh warmest July. Overall, the summer was the seventh warmest since 1872 in Boston. There were 12 90° days in July, the fourth most on record for the month.

Hartford bookended the all-time warmest month (July) with two top-10 wettest months in June and August. June was the second wettest since 1905, and August was 8th wettest. June to August was the second wettest and eighth warmest on record in Hartford.

Worcester also had top-five warmest and wettest months this summer. June was the second wettest since 1892, and July was the fifth warmest.

Interestingly, with such a hot month of July, only one record high temperature was broken at the four major climatology sites in Southern New England. On July 29, the temperature in Boston reached 99°. That broke the old record of 98° set in 1982.
