Tropical Storm Humberto formed in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean early Monday morning about 100 miles south of the Cape Verde Islands off the Africa coast. The storm is in an area that is favorable for intensification, and it is expected to become a hurricane Tuesday or Wednesday. The storm will bring 40+ mph winds and 3-6 inches of rain to the Cape Verde Islands as it moves west then northwest over the next couple of days. The extended forecast keeps the storm in the Atlantic Ocean far away from land by the end of the week.
This hurricane season has been noteworthy because there has not been a hurricane among the first eight storms of the season. If Humberto becomes a hurricane before September 11, it will be the second latest date in the season that the first hurricane has formed in the Atlantic basin during the satellite era – since 1960. Hurricane Gustav was the first hurricane of the 2002 hurricane season, forming on September 11.
