October 2013 among driest in Providence and Boston

A large part of Southeastern New England has slipped into a moderate drought after more than eight straight weeks of mainly dry weather. The last four weeks of September were very dry, and October was among the driest on record in Providence and Boston. A few stray showers on Halloween were not enough to knock 2013 out of the top-5 driest on record in the Providence area. The 0.61″ of precipitation is the fourth driest since 1905, and driest since 1994. Boston received 0.61″ of rain in October. That ranks as the sixth driest since 1872, and driest since 1994. Worcester and Hartford were both outside of the top 10 driest October on record.

Scattered showers are likely on November 1, but then it’s back to another 6-7 day stretch of mainly dry weather through the first week of November. There are no drought-busting rains in the forecast.
