Winter Storm Watch for Southern New England

A large and powerful storm will hit the Northeastern United States from early Thursday into Friday morning. The storm has the potential to bring significant accumulating snow to Southern New England. The wind will increase Thursday night, and poor visibility may lead to near-blizzard conditions late Thursday night and Friday morning – especially in Eastern MA. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM
WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY
MORNING.

* LOCATIONS...ALL OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND.

* HAZARD TYPES...HEAVY SNOW AND DANGEROUSLY COLD WIND CHILLS.
  CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WITH NEAR BLIZZARD
  CONDITIONS POSSIBLE AT TIMES ALONG THE EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS
  COAST...RESULTING IN WHITEOUT CONDITIONS.

* ACCUMULATIONS...SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 6 TO 12 INCHES ACROSS MOST
  OF THE REGION. HIGHER AMOUNTS OF 8 TO 14 INCHES ARE EXPECTED
  ALONG THE EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS WITH PERHAPS EVEN LOCALLY HIGHER
  AMOUNTS.

* TIMING...AREAS OF LIGHT SNOW WILL DEVELOP AFTER MIDNIGHT AND
  CONTINUE AT TIMES INTO THURSDAY. THERE MAY BE A LULL IN THE SNOW
  DURING THE DAY THURSDAY...ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF THE MASSACHUSETTS
  TURNPIKE. THE WORST OF THE STORM IS EXPECTED TO COME THURSDAY
  NIGHT INTO EARLY FRIDAY WITH 1 TO 2 INCH PER HOUR SNOWFALL RATES
  POSSIBLE.

* IMPACTS...HEAVY SNOW/GUSTY WINDS WILL RESULT IN DANGEROUSLY COLD
  WIND CHILLS ALONG WITH CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW.
  NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE FOR A TIME ALONG THE
  EASTERN MA COAST THURSDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY FRIDAY...RESULTING IN
  WHITEOUT CONDITIONS.  TRAVEL MAY BECOME IMPOSSIBLE.

* WINDS...NORTHEAST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH.
  STRONGEST WINDS ALONG THE COAST.

* VISIBILITIES...ONE QUARTER MILE AT TIMES.

SNOW OF 6 OR MORE INCHES IN A 12 HOUR PERIOD...OR 8 OR MORE
INCHES IN A 24 HOUR PERIOD. ANYONE TRAVELING IN THE NEXT 24 TO
36 HOURS SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO MODIFY
TRAVEL PLANS SHOULD WINTER WEATHER DEVELOP.
