Meteorological Winter Cold and Snowy in SNE

The start of March means the end of meteorological winter. It was a cold winter for most of the country, including Southern New England. All three months were colder than normal in Southern New England, with Hartford the farthest from normal, averaging 2.7° below normal from December through February. While colder than normal, it was not the coldest winter in recent memory. Just three years ago, the winter of 2010-2011 was colder in Providence and Hartford. The winter of 2002-2003 was colder in all of Southern New England.

As cold as it was in the Northeast, it was much colder in the Upper Midwest, both in terms of actual temperature and deviation from normal. Parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota averaged about 10° F colder than normal for the winter!
As cold as it was in the Northeast, it was much colder in the Upper Midwest, both in terms of actual temperature and deviation from normal. Parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota averaged about 10° F colder than normal for the winter! Southern New England was 2-3° colder than normal.

Snow totals were above normal in all of Southern New England. It was the third snowiest December to February (80.4″) in Worcester since 1892. Providence, Boston, and Hartford were all received well above normal snowfall, but not enough to crack the top ten snowiest winters on record.
