Tuesday was the warmest day for many in Southern New England since December 22, 2013 – 79 days ago. The high temperature reached the upper 50s to low 60s in most spots under mostly sunny skies. Unfortunately, the weather will take a turn for the worse on Wednesday. It will not be too bad Wednesday morning with clouds thickening and lows in the 30s. The temperature will climb into the mid 40s to low 50s, and the best chance of rain on Wednesday is not until mid to late afternoon.
Rain is likely Wednesday evening. It will get colder after midnight, and a change to mixed precipitation then snow is possible by dawn Thursday in the I-95 corridor. The temperature will plummet to the low 20s by early Thursday morning and a flash freeze is possible making for a slippery commute. The northwest wind will increase to 15-35 mph as the storm intensifies once passed Southern New England.
Thursday morning looks windy and very cold with snow showers or flurries. The best chance of picking up an inch or two of snow is in Eastern Massachusetts. The temperature will hover in the teens to low 20s, and wind chills will be in the single digits thanks to 20-45 mph northwesterly winds. The snow threat ends in the early to mid afternoon on Thursday.
The sky will clear Thursday night, and the temperature will fall into the single digits to low teens, with wind chills near zero. The wind will relax to 5-10 mph at night. Friday looks partly cloudy and cool, with highs in the mid 30s.
Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy, and milder, with the chance of a few passing showers. Highs will range from the mid 40s near the coast to near 50 inland. If the sun breaks through for a few hours, the temperature may reach the mid 50s. It will be cooler near the coast because of a 15-25 mph southwest wind. Sunday will likely be dry and cooler, with highs closer to 40. We are watching the potential for some snow on St. Patrick’s Day. A storm may form along the Eastern Seaboard and move north towards New England. We’ll keep you posted.
