December 29 – Soggy end to 2019; Dry for the New Year
A storm system that will bring a mess of wintry weather to New England delivers mainly rain to Connecticut, Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. The weather stays dry through the day on Sunday before a brief mix of sleet and rain changes to all rain Sunday night. The temperature may be near 32° inland around midnight, but it will rise into the mid 30s before significant icing happens in most areas. The highest terrain of CT and RI could get some glaze before the temperature warms.
Steady rain is likely Sunday night and Monday with temps in the 30s. Sleet may mix with the rain inland at times Monday. The exact track of the storm will determine precipitation type Monday night into Tuesday. Right now, it’s like that it will not be snow in CT, RI or SE MA. Temps will stay in the 30s to low 40s (near the coast) as rain continues. Any precipitation ends Tuesday morning, and dry skies are likely for New Year’s Eve. The temperature will reach the low to mid 40s Tuesday afternoon before falling into the 30s Tuesday evening. It will get to near freezing overnight, so any wet pavement could become slick.
2020 starts with a dry and seasonable day. Expect highs near 40 with a blend of clouds and sun on Wednesday. Quiet weather continues on Thursday. A storm will cut to the west of New England this weekend and bring rain Friday and Saturday. Right now, it looks like a showery Friday with highs in the 40s. The temperature may reach the mid 50s on Saturday as southerly winds kick in.
It will turn colder late next weekend, and the first full week of 2020 looks colder than the first few days of the year. Snow isn’t imminent, but it will feel more like winter.
