October 2012: Warmer, drier than normal in Providence

October featured a lot of variability for the first half of the month, but the second half was warmer than normal. The impact of Hurricane Sandy is how many of us will remember this month, but the storm did not bring enough widespread rain to recover from a dry stretch, and the month ended with slightly below normal rainfall at TF Green Airport.

  • The average temperature was 56.2 degrees F, 2.6 degrees warmer than the normal
  • There was 3.6″ of rain, 0.3″ below the normal or 92% of the normal
  • 20 of the 31 days had at least a trace of rain
  • No daily or monthly temperature or precipitation records were set at TF Green Airport
  • The temperature fell to 31° on October 13, but after October 17, the temperature stayed above 40°, and the final 13 days of the month were warmer than normal
  • The peak winds occurred on October 29 as Hurricane Sandy passed to our south. TF Green saw a sustained wind of 41 mph, with a 59 mph wind gust.
