Rain Tuesday evening, sun returns Wednesday

Right Weather Interactive RadarSteady rain is likely in Southeastern New England through Tuesday evening. In spite of thick clouds, the temperature rose into the low to mid 50s by early Tuesday afternoon ahead of the showers. It was the first 50° temperature at TF Green Airport since January 31. Showers slowly advanced through CT and W MA, before moving into Western RI after 3 pm. The rain will continue until around midnight in RI, and until 2-3 am in Eastern MA. Most areas should pick up 0.5-1″ of rain. The rain combined with melting snow may lead to some minor stream/river flooding in parts of MA and CT. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the areas most at risk.

The trend for later in the week into next week is for colder weather. Thursday and Friday will feature some sunshine, but highs in the upper 30s to low 40s – rather cool for mid-March.

Unsettled weather Saturday

A fast-moving Alberta Clipper may bring some rain or wet snow to Southern New England on Saturday. The timing is during the day, and there may be some showers in Newport, RI for the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Highs will be in the upper 30s to low 40s on Saturday and Sunday, too. The long range outlook has the threat of another storm early next week. It’s too early to say if it will be snow, rain, or a mix, and it looks like it may vary depending on what part of New England you live in. The best chance of all snow is in Central and Northern New England, but snow can’t be ruled out if Southern New England if the storm tracks far enough south. It’s safe to say that the weather will not be at all spring-like for the start of spring next Wednesday.
