September in Southern New England began with warm, humid, rainy conditions during the Labor Day weekend. It’s seems fitting given that the summer of 2013 was among the wettest and warmest on record in Providence, RI. The pattern has picked up where it left off, but there are signs that cooler, drier air will be arriving by the middle of the first week. September is typically a transitional month with a variety of weather in Southern New England. There can be summer-like heat and humidity, and by the end of the month low temperatures in the 40s are not uncommon. In fact, every day in the last two weeks of the month features a record low temperature in the 30s!
Of course, there is also the omnipresent tropical threat as the hurricane season peaks during September. On a brighter note, the end of the month is a great time to pick apples and pumpkins in Southern New England.
